Human Physiology in Extreme Environments is the one publication that offers how human biology and physiology is affected by extreme environments while highlighting technological innovations that allow us to adapt and regulate environments. Covering a broad range of extreme environments, including high altitude, underwater, tropical climates, and desert and arctic climates as well as space travel, this book will include case studies for practical application. Graduate students, medical students and researchers will find Human Physiology in Extreme Environments an interesting, informative and useful resource for human physiology, environmental physiology and medical studies.

Hanns-Christian Gunga studies geology-palaeontology and human medicine. Since 2004 he teaches "Human Physiology in Space and Extreme Environments" at the Charit Medical School in Berlin, where he holds a professorship in physiology. He started his career at the Department of Physiology at the Free University Berlin under the guidance of Karl Kirsch, with historical studies about life and scientific work of the famous physiologist Nathan Zuntz (1847-1920), who was a pioneer studying human physiology in extreme environments. Later Prof. Gunga and his team - Dr Opatz, Dr. Stahn, and Dr. Steinach, who are co-authors of different chapter in this book - performed experimental laboratory and field studies in humans on cardio-vascular topics during bedrest, head-down tilt, isolation and confinement and conducted studies at high altitude, in hot and cold climates and in space. He also was involved in several space missions (D-1, D-2, MIR, ISS) and is currently ESA Principal Investigator (PI) of the experiment Circadian Rhythms on the International Space State ISS. He is member in several national and International advisory boards related to human performance in extreme environments.
