Adam Clulow was born in South Africa. He completed his first degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, his MA in East Asian History at Niigata University in Japan and his PhD at Columbia University. Currently he teaches East Asian history at Monash University (since 2008). His first book, The Company and The Shogun: The Dutch Encounter with Tokugawa Japan, was awarded the Jerry Bentley Prize in World History from the American Historical Association and the 2016 W K Hancock prize, given by the Australian Historical Association.
