Alan L. Buchman, MD, MSPH, is Visiting Clinical Professor of Surgery and Medical Director at the Intestinal Rehabilitation and Transplant Center, University of Illinois at Chicago. He took his undergraduate training at Northwestern University, obtained his medical degree at the Chicago Medical School, and completed a fellowship in clinical nutrition at UCLA and received his MS in public health. He completed his fellowship in gastroenterology at Emory University and has served on the faculties of the Baylor College of Medicine, the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Northwestern University, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has served on 21 peer-reviewed journal editorial boards and has authored nearly 250 peer-reviewed articles, editorials, and book chapters, as well as four books. He has received numerous awards from several societies and has served on numerous national committees. His research focuses on complications and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, the complications of intestinal failure, and long-term parenteral nutrition. He is considered a world authority in nutrition, intestinal failure, and inflammatory bowel disease.
