Affliction: Health, Disease, Poverty inaugurates a novel way of understanding the trajectories of health and disease in the context of poverty. It traces the unfolding of illness within families, local communities, neighborhood markets and in occult worlds. Veena Das is Krieger-Eisenhower Professor of Anthropology at the Johns Hopkins University. Her most recent books are Affliction: Health, Disease, Poverty ; Four Lectures on Ethics (with Michael Lambek, Didier Fassin, and Webb Keane); and Life and Words: Violence and the Descent into the Ordinary . Das is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy. She has received honorary doctorates from the Universality of Chicago, University of Edinburgh, University of Bern, and from Durham University.
