This book, whose original French edition achieved worldwide attention when its author died trying to save two children caught in a riptide, challenges the psychic work the modern world devotes to avoiding risk. Weaving psychoanalytic case studies together with philosophical reflections, Dufourmantelle shows how risk is an essential property of life, one that requires our embrace.

Anne Dufourmantelle was born in Paris, France on March 20, 1964. She attended Brown University and received a doctoral degree in philosophy from Paris-Sorbonne University. She was a philosopher and psychoanalyst who praised living a life that embraced risk. She wrote several books including Éloge du Risque (In Praise of Risk). She drowned while trying to save two children who were struggling to swim off the coast of Pampelonne beach in France on July 21, 2017 at the age of 53.
