Confined to a nursing home, severely impaired by dementia and frustrated by his circumstances, his life epitomized the predicament her mother wanted to avoid. So Far Away gives us an intimate view of a person interacting with and reacting to her parents at the ends of their lives. In a richly detailed, poignant story of family members' separate yet interwoven journeys, it underscores the complexities and opportunities that life presents each one of us. Christine Hartmann was born in Toledo, Ohio and grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1987 with a B.A. in German literature. Christine spent 9 years teaching in rural Japan. After returning to the U.S. she earned her Master's and Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr's Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research. Having held a number of research positions, she now works at the Veteran's Health Administration and holds a faculty appointment at Boston University. Christine's first book is So Far Away.
