The purpose of this volume is to bring together source material dealing with modern concepts in soil formation and classification. In recent years, considerable progress has been made in recognizing genetic soil groups, in understanding specific mechanisms involved in soil formation and in developing concepts in soil classification. Of course, it is possible to assemble in a single volume only a small sample of papers dealing with these advances. It is hoped, however, that papers presented on the following pages will provide some understanding of concepts and problems in pedology for students of soil science or related fields. This book is not intended to present an integrated analysis of recent research, but it is designed to provide text material or supplemental reading for a course in soil formation and classification.
