This anthology presents, in English translation, twenty haikus each from the work of twenty modern poets. The writers have been selected to exemplify the various trends that have dominated Japanese haiku in the last hundred years, but the individual haiku have been selected for literary merit.


Ueda Makoto :

Makoto Ueda is a professor of Japanese and comparative literature at Standford University, and the author of four books, including Zeami, Bashõ, Yeats, Pound and Matsuo Bashõ. He received the Gerald Brady Memorial Award from the Haiku Society of America for his contribution to haiku poetry and criticism in English.
