Chapters of Erie is a classic account of ruthless business practices in nineteenth-century America--in particular, Jay Gould and James Fisk's successful effort to gain control of the Erie Railroad in 1868 and subsequent attempt to corner the American gold market, which resulted in the "Black Friday" panic of September 24, 1869.


Charles Francis Adams Jr. (1835-1915) was a Massachusetts railroad commissioner and president of the Union Pacific Railroad from 1884 to 1890. Henry Adams (1838-1918) was a journalist, novelist, and historian. His many books include The History of the United States of America (1801 to 1817) and The Education of Henry Adams , which received the Pulitzer Prize in 1919. Robert H. Elias (1933-1983) was Goldwin Smith Professor of English Literature and American Studies at Cornell University.
