But academic chairs and research institutions were late in developing, as they were in the United States themselves. In most European universities the subject was firmly established only after the Second World War. Skard Sigmund : Sigmund Skard, born in 1903, was educated a the Sorbonne and Oslo, where he taught comparative literature from 1933 to 1938. In 1941-45 he was in American government service in Washington, D.C., after which he took up the position of Professor of American Literature at the University of Oslo. |
