He graduated from the University of Adelaide and was a history professor at La Trobe University, Melbourne from 1968 until his retirement in 2006. He was the author of numerous books including Convict Society and Its Enemies, The Strange Birth of Colonial Democracy, The Sentimental Nation, The Shortest History of Europe, Australian History in 7 Questions, and Sense and Nonsense in Australian History.
