Xu Liu has a doctorate from University College London, Institute of Education, which focussed upon the development and governance in education in China. Xu Liu brought an intimate, insider's knowledge to the research project having been to school in the area. Most crucially Liu speaks the local dialect of the county area enabling interviews to be conducted from a position of trust.

Steven Cowan has a PhD from the Institute of Education, London. He worked there as a researcher and lecturer. He has visited and lectured at many universities across China and has undertaken research in Guangdong, Shandong and Sichuan. His research focuses on education history and Chinese studies.
