Relational psychodynamic psychotherapy arose in reaction to hierarchical, doctor-patient aspects of Freudian psychoanalysis. Joan E. Sarnat is a clinical psychologist-psychoanalyst in clinical and supervisory practice in Berkeley California. She is a personal and supervising analyst and is on the faculty of the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California and she serves on their Board of Directors. Dr. Sarnat also teaches and supervises at The Psychotherapy Institute The Wright Institute and the Northern California Society for Psychology.
