She is the author or editor of a number of books on early modern Egypt, including In Praise of Books: A Cultural History of Cairo's Middle Class, Sixteenth to Eighteenth Century and (with Raouf Abbas) Society and Economy in Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranean 1600-1900.
