The aim was to bring togetherengineers and mathematicians working in the field of linearinfinite-dimensional systems who are specialists in one ormore of the following categories of mathematical approaches:semigroup approches,p.d.e. approaches, frequency domainapproaches and syntheses of state-space and frequency domainapproaches. It is therefore important tocompare and discuss the advantages and disadvantages ofthese different mathematical techniques. To help amelioratethe communication gab a series of introductory tutoriallectures were given by specialists in the above-mentionedfields. There were complemented by some key survey papers onmore recent research, as well as by papers representingoriginal research in these areas.
