This volume tells the exciting story of the Inn of the Good Samaritan archaeological site and of The Good Samaritan Museum erected there. The Good Samaritan site is located at the upper end of biblical Ma'aale Adummim (Josh. 15:7; 18:17), at the midway point of the ancient Jerusalem-Jericho road,in use since the dawn of history. While the relatively few Second Temple period archaeological remains found do not reflect the site's importance during that time. They do, however, allude to the true historical background of the Good Samaritan parable, and to the firm basis of the identification of Ma'ale Adummim with the Inn of the Good Samaritan, which was first made by Hieronymus. The Good samaritan Museum displays mainly mosaics and other artifacts found in Judea, Samaria and Gaza. The idea behind this museum and its selection of mosaics was inspired by the Parable of the Good Samaritan in the New Testament (Luke 10:25-37). This parable includes men of three different faiths: Jesus, the founder of Christianity, Jews and a Samaritan who performs a merciful deed. Accordingly, the museum exhibits mosaics and other artifacts from both Jewish and Samaritan synagogues, as well as from churches.
