The second edition of this authoritative textbook equips students with the tools they will need to tackle the challenges of sustainable building design and engineering. The book looks at how to design, engineer and monitor energy efficient buildings, how to adapt buildings to climate change, and how to make buildings healthy, comfortable and secure. New material for this edition includes sections on environmental masterplanning, renewable technologies, retrofitting, passive house design, thermal comfort and indoor air quality. With chapters and case studies from a range of international, interdisciplinary authors, the book is essential reading for students and professionals in building engineering, environmental design, construction and architecture.

Dejan Mumovic is Professor of Building Performance Analysis and the Director of the Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering (IEDE) at The Bartlett, University College London (UCL). He has been a driving force and the Chair of the MEng Engineering and Architectural Design, a radical four-year programme which has been designed to address fragmentation in the building design industry by combining the major disciplines of architectural, structural and environmental design and engineering. He also contributed to the development of MSc Environmental Design and Engineering, MSc Health, Wellbeing and Sustainable Buildings, and MSc Smart Buildings and Digital Engineering.

Dejan is a building scientist with a background in heating, ventilation and air conditioning engineering and has extensive experience of monitoring and modelling work in the field of the built environment. His research focuses on the development of appropriate techniques necessary for evaluating built environment issues holistically. In the last 15 years Dejan has led, co-led or significantly contributed to 40 research projects, and co-authored over 150 peer reviewed publications. He also sits on editorial advisory boards of Taylor & Francis' Intelligent Buildings International , SAGE's BSERT and Elsevier's International Journal of Sustainable Built Environments . Dejan is a co-founder of two specialist groups: IBPSA-England (an affiliate of the International Building Performance Simulation Association) and CIBSE School Design Group.

Mat Santamouris is Professor of High Performance Architecture in the University of New South Wales in Australia. He is also a Professor at the University of Athens, Greece, and visiting Professor at the Cyprus Institute, Metropolitan University of London, Tokyo Polytechnic University, Bolzano University, Brunel University and National University of Singapore. He is Director of the Laboratory of Building Energy Research at the University of Athens and Past President of the National Center of Renewable and Energy Savings of Greece.

Mat is the Editor in Chief of Energy and Buildings , and the past Editor in Chief of the J ournal of Advances in Building Energy Research . He is the editor and author of 14 international books on topics related to heat islands, solar energy and energy conservation in buildings, and the guest editor of 12 special issues in the field of building science and engineering. Mat is a scientific coordinator of many international research programme and author of almost 240 scientific papers published in peer reviewed international scientific journals. He is a reviewer of research projects in 15 countries including the USA, UK, France, Germany, Canada, and Sweden.
